Does Magnesium Help In Sleep?

Having a restful sleep has become a rare thing in our society. The worries, tensions, and stress of daily life have severely disturbed the relaxed state of our body and brain. And, magnesium can help in relaxing the both; body and brain. Therefore, we can say that magnesium does help in inducing a restful sleep but how magnesium does that?

How does magnesium help in sleep?

Our body is a complete network of different systems, out of which, one is called the parasympathetic nervous system. This system is responsible for making our body feel calm and relax. The help magnesium offers, through this system, is the regulation of neurotransmitters, regulation of melatonin (the sleep-inducing hormone), and activation of GABA; the neurotransmitter that helps in relaxing the nerves. In this way, magnesium can help in a restful sleep by making our body and mind calm and relaxed.

Several studies have concluded the association of magnesium with normal sleep patterns. A person who is deficient in magnesium often witnesses irregular sleep patterns, also known as active sleep. Whereas, a sufficient intake of magnesium helps in calm and restful sleep, also known as quiet sleep. Quiet sleep can be described as the sleep in which a person is totally unaware of his/her surroundings and does not face any irregular wake-up calls.

How does improper sleep affect us?

Having a sleepless night does not do any health harm except for fatigue and tiredness. But having such nights, over and over again, will definitely cause more than just fatigue. A person having continuous sleepless nights is at a greater risk of developing obesity, diabetes, high blood pressure, and other heart issues as compared to a person with normal sleep patterns.

Apart from these metabolic issues, improper sleep can also cause physical harm to the person, and how does this happen? Suppose, a person driving a car or walking on a road who is having bad sleep for the last few nights or maybe no sleep at all, suddenly starts yawning or acts sleepy, and gets off the lane, then what will happen? The person will either fall or get hit into something which will definitely cause a little or severe physical harm to that person, and this can create a risk for others, as well.

From where to get magnesium?

Like every nutrient is naturally present in our environment, similarly, magnesium can also be found in different natural foods like legumes, green-colored vegetables, some nuts, and fish. But here is another thing that might need some attention and that is when sleep gets disturbed, the appetite gets disturbed as well. This means that taking magnesium through a diet will not be as easy as it normally is. Then what should be done? There are dietary supplements specially designed for such scenarios when the diet does not remain an efficient source to help fulfill nutritional requirements.

Similarly, Magnesium is a dietary supplement that contains Magnesium Oxide, a highly absorbable form of magnesium, and is highly effective in providing all the health benefits that magnesium promises. Magnesium can help in efficient muscle movement and relaxing the body and mind. Due to its property of relaxing the mind, Magnesium can help in managing stress, anxiety, and depression, as well.
